These days we get more than a dozen requests per week. The amount of people who recognize their personal needs for help, and are willing to find help in the form of a service dog, are growing. The service and help that these dogs can provide is an almost superhero level of assistance.”

Service dogs, not to be confused with other legally designated Emotional Support Animals or Therapy Dogs, are dogs that are trained to do specific task work to help individuals with disabilities.

For someone with diabetes the dog may be trained to smell low blood sugar, for someone with PTSD or anxiety the dog might be trained to perform ‘pattern interrupts’ or ‘deep pressure therapy’. For a child with autism the dog could be trained to track down the child if they run away, a common occurrence, or help with tantrums.

In addition to the task training, service dogs must receive extensive obedience training so that they can go into public places and not be a nuisance or danger. Service dogs are legally permitted in most public places where the general public can go.

While there is no legal requirement that a service dog and handler team undergo professional training, experts recommend getting help from qualified trainers with experience.
