Utah-Based Dog Training Company Trains Service Dogs for People With Disabilities

Salt Lake City, Utah – TikTok, gourmet meal kits, and Zodiac signs are all things that are trending and gaining in popularity. Add another to the list, service dogs trained for people with disabilities.

“We trained our first service dog about 12 years ago,” said Ty Brown, owner of Ty the Dog Guy dog training in Salt Lake City, Utah. “At the time, we would rarely get requests for service dogs. These days we get more than a dozen requests per week. The amount of people who recognize their personal needs for help, and are willing to find help in the form of a service dog, are growing. The service and help that these dogs can provide is an almost superhero level of assistance.”

Service dogs, not to be confused with other legally designated Emotional Support Animals or Therapy Dogs, are dogs that are trained to do specific task work to help individuals with disabilities.

For someone with diabetes the dog may be trained to smell low blood sugar, for someone with PTSD or anxiety the dog might be trained to perform ‘pattern interrupts’ or ‘deep pressure therapy’. For a child with autism the dog could be trained to track down the child if they run away, a common occurrence, or help with tantrums.

In addition to the task training, service dogs must receive extensive obedience training so that they can go into public places and not be a nuisance or danger. Service dogs are legally permitted in most public places where the general public can go.

While there is no legal requirement that a service dog and handler team undergo professional training, experts recommend getting help from qualified trainers with experience.

Ty the Dog Guy has been in operation since 2006, having been awarded the Best of State award for best dog trainer in Utah 10 times. The company has been involved with the community in supporting several causes that help dogs who are owned by people who have fallen homeless and with the unhoused community itself. In addition to service dogs the company also trains the average pet dog for things like overcoming behavior problems, aggression challenges, obedience training, puppy training, and more.

Ty Brown the dog trainer and Ty the Dog Guy Dog Training operate through an in-home training model where the trainers visit their clients at their residence or place of business. The company has trainers working along the entire Wasatch front from Ogden to Salt Lake City and into Utah County including Provo and Orem.
