The 14th Annual Art of Painting in the 21st Century Exhibition and Conference

Co-curated by John Natsoulas and John Seed, the 14th Annual Art of Painting in the 21st Century Exhibition and Conference is coming soon! Experience a once-in-a-lifetime event where visitors can meet top artists in an intimate setting and learn about the current discussions and trends within modern painting.

Opening on October 4th, the exhibition, titled Unreal, showcases surreal paintings by Avery Palmer, Alex Gross, Peter Zokosky, John Brosio, and many more outstanding artists. The show will be open until December 2nd. “Unless you somehow missed the tsunami of movies, record cover albums, posters and museum tote bags spawned by Surrealism over the years, you may have become numb to its once potent mix of bizarre fantasies, erotic musings and psychological fixations. Despite this visual overload, the paintings in this exhibition of contemporary Surrealism should still light fires in your imagination.” – John Seed

On October 14th, visitors can participate in the lively and educational conference geared towards nurturing dialogue on contemporary painting and the shared ideas that define current trends in the field. This conference provides a unique opportunity and an intimate setting to interact with top artists. UC Davis, home to artist Roy de Forest, Roland Peterson, Wayne Thiebaud, and Robert Arneson, was instrumental in defining a new direction for a uniquely West Coast style. Nowhere else in the country will the participant be able to interact and discuss the purity of painting in one place. “This is the kind of educational, intellectual event one expects from museums or universities, but which public institutions seem less and less able to provide.” – Artweek Magazine

With an oil paint demonstration and workshop by Ryan Martin, sponsored by Winsor & Newton, a panel discussion with John Seed, Bill Maul, and Alla Bartoshchuk, and lectures by Carrie Ann Baade and Chester Arnold, visitors won’t leave Davis dissatisfied. The Gallery is thrilled to host all of these incredible surrealists. This conference is packed full of art demonstrations, lectures, and several discussions art-lovers don’t want to miss out on! Adult tickets are $75, and student tickets will be free until October 1.
