Pacific Sands Academy Earns Accreditation

As of the 2023-2024 school year, Pacific Sands Academy earned accreditation through the National Association of Legal Support of Alternative Schools (NALSAS). Since 2017, Pacific Sands Academy worked with a sister school (West River Academy) to provide accredited options for their families. Families would pay extra for this accreditation. Now, all children and teens enrolled in Pacific Sands Academy receive the accreditation stamp on their report cards, transcripts, and diplomas.

Pacific Sands Academy was founded in 2012 to provide an alternative high school for struggling students. PSA started with helping a handful of students each year, but enrollment increased significantly through the late two thousand teens. Once Covid hit, Pacific Sands Academy opened to K-8 students and enrollment exploded. They now support close to 100 students each year, grades K-12, and graduate approximately 20 high school seniors. Students at Pacific Sands Academy live interesting lives and pursue out of the box educational experiences. One student is currently building a plane, another earned his pilot’s license, some start small businesses or create YouTube channels, many work on their athleticism or artistry, many spend much of their time working on ranches or at barns with horses and other animals, many attend community college dual enrollment programs or work jobs with their work permits, some pursue academically rigorous curricula, while others homeschool with a more unschooling philosophy. NALSAS Accreditation for Pacific Sands Academy provides more legitimacy and a peace of mind to families venturing out on these alternative paths of education, while their kids earn standardized high school transcripts and diplomas.

Pacific Sands Academy allows students and families a great deal of latitude when determining their curriculum for K-12 students. Because of these many curricular possibilities, accreditation has been a difficult option for Pacific Sands Academy to pursue; however, NALSAS provides a great deal of academic freedom. Only four other schools are accredited by NALSAS in California, and Pacific Sands Academy is currently the only school in northern California to maintain this accreditation.

NALSAS, originating in 1973, was designed to help interested people and organizations create and find viable alternatives to traditional schools. Accreditation from NALSAS provides an assurance to the general public: 1) that the School complies with all state and local laws; and 2) that the advertising claims of the school have been verified.
