Latina Sisters Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month With New Model Of Care

Two sisters are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (now thru Oct 15) by promoting a new model of care — luxurious healing. Drawing on their ancestral roots, Lexi Maldonado, RN, BSN and Erika Maldonado, EdD established Calicia Care in honor of their grandmothers (Calicia is a portmanteau of their first names, Carmen and Alicia). Their Beverly Hills company fills a niche that until now has been undiscovered — accommodating the sometimes extraordinary demands of those recovering post-op.

The sisters are honoring their grandmothers whose nurturing and caring nature set the tone for the company. They grew up in the San Fernando Valley and with the support of their family have been able to grow a business

“We refer to our services as ‘luxurious recovery’ even though we care for a wide variety of patients who cross myriad socio-economic lines,” says Lexi, who shared that their family came from modest beginnings whose work ethic and “stick-with-it-ness” has helped them grow the business.

Added Erika, “Because post-op care can be daunting for those not in the healthcare field, it’s best that a professional be there to ensure that the patient receives the proper care.”

According to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, more than 40% of patients experience post-op complications ranging from infections, bleeding, urinary retention, difficulty breathing and accelerated heart rate to increases and decreases in blood pressure, pulmonary embolisms, and kidney failure.

The sisters have used these statistics to reach out to the Beverly Hills surgical community with special emphasis on plastic surgeons to offer their services. Not only do they offer 24/7 ’round-the-clock care, but they go the extra mile in some surprising ways.

For instance, after being transported via a luxury vehicle from the operating table accompanied by their own nurse, patients are escorted to their luxury suites at top hotels like the Beverly Hilton via private elevators to avoid the gazing eyes of the public (many of their clients are top celebs).

Among the more surprising demands made of them is removing existing art from the client’s hotel suite and replacing it with paintings from their private collection, hiring a feng shui expert before check-in to redecorate the room to maximize optimum positive energy, retaining the services of masseurs, acupuncturists, Reiki experts, etc. to ply their trades to facilitate the healing process, retaining private chefs to prepare special meals, ordering special meals prepared for the patients’ pets, and hiring hair and make-up experts in time for check out.
