About John A. Graham
As a U.S. Foreign Service Officer for fifteen years, Graham was in the middle of wars, revolutions, and arms sales. As an alpinist, he’s climbed some of the biggest and baddest mountains on the planet. Then his life shifted. During a three-year stint at the U.S. Mission to the UN, he began to focus his skills and energy on ending apartheid and other human rights abuses, and on stopping wars instead of starting them, taking actions that were often at
odds with US policies.
In 1980 he decided he could do more for peace and justice by quitting the Foreign Service and working with people who shared his goals – people who were working to make things better. He allied with such a person, Ann Medlock, Founder of The Giraffe Heroes Project, a nonprofit that honors people all over the world who “stick their necks out” to make that world a better place.
About The Giraffe Heroes Project
Medlock had started the Project in 1981 as an antidote to the mind-numbing violence and trivia that pervade the media, eroding civic energy and hope. The Project finds “Giraffe Heroes,” compassionate risk-takers who are largely unknown, and tells their stories; others are moved by these stories to stick their necks out too, helping solve public problems important to them. Books, blogs, curricula, speeches and trainings all help
individuals succeed.
Graham also leads Giraffe Heroes International, taking Giraffe vision and programs to countries in Africa and Asia that need them most.
